1912 Map of the There was an official program printed for the events in January of 1912. Widely distributed, it included articles of note regarding the train's construction and the "destination cities" of Key West and Havana. And there, on the last two pages, is this wonderful map designed to assist the visitor in getting around Key West. The railroad track enters the island and culminates at the "land made by Mr. Flagler" the mark denoting the old shore line gives us an idea of the island's outline before the huge landfill project ordered by Flagler and carried out by William Trumbo. The Key West Electric Trolley routes are highlighted in yellow. The car barn is marked in pink at the foot of Simonton Street. That property now holds the Reach Resort. (Below, left) An abandoned trolley wheel on said property. The wheel can be seen on the right side of Vernon Street as you head toward Louie's Backyard. The horses were stabled on Division Street (now Truman Avenue) at what's now Bargain Books. Although the map gives us an idea of what Key West was like in 1912, knowing artifacts of both the railroad and trolley lines survive and can be seen today is especially nice.- |
